Gardens have always provided food and relaxation, and the medieval period was no exception.
The peasants needed gardens to provide food, flavourings, simple medicines and cosmetics.
The lords created gardens to show their status and for the pleasure of sweetly scented herbs. Peaceful places to retire to, in order to relax, discuss politics and maybe indulge themselves with wine, song, dancing and Courtly Love.
